Riis Bilglass Chain Manager
We began working seriously on sustainability in 2017 and achieved Eco-Lighthouse certification in 2018. However, our focus on waste management started around 2007.
Our motivation was to become a more sustainable company and to be among the first in Norway’s automotive industry to take significant action.
Additionally, we recognized the financial benefits of sustainability, such as reducing long-term costs while making a positive environmental impact.
Reducing our CO₂ footprint is a key priority for us.
Over time, we have transitioned our company vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) to minimize emissions. We also place a strong emphasis on waste management, striving to maximize recycling and resource efficiency. Additionally, we have implemented strict guidelines for windshield repairs. Furthermore, we require our suppliers to have a robust sustainability strategy in place, ensuring that our entire supply chain aligns with our environmental commitments.
Our primary objective is to meet our customers’ sustainability expectations, as failing to do so would impact our ability to be selected as a supplier. In the long term, we have observed cost savings through various sustainability initiatives. For instance, we have reduced heating costs by implementing solar power, heat pumps, and improved insulation in our workstations. Additionally, transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) has significantly lowered our fuel expenses, further reinforcing our commitment to sustainability while enhancing cost efficiency.
Our biggest challenge was ensuring that our chain members (workshops) recognized the importance of a well-structured sustainability strategy for our organization. Additionally, implementing effective routines required significant time and effort to achieve long-term success.
We have a strong collaboration with Eco-Lighthouse in Norway, which has been instrumental in guiding our sustainability efforts.
Additionally, we have received valuable support from an external consulting firm, helping us further develop and implement effective sustainability strategies.
Our goal is to continually reduce our CO₂ footprint, viewing sustainability as both an essential and profitable initiative. We believe that achieving this requires the active involvement of every part of the organization.
We have observed that effective cost management not only enhances our sustainability efforts but also improves profitability, demonstrating that environmental responsibility and financial success can go hand in hand.
It is essential to involve the entire organization, not just top management. Additionally, understanding the broader advantages, including the potential to become a preferred supplier, can further drive sustainability efforts.
As in every other industry, sustainability will be crucial for long-term success. Companies that fail to adapt may struggle to remain competitive in the future.
